New Legends Magazine!

Steve WhartonSteve Wharton, owner of New Legends Productions and stunning portrait photographer’s official involvement in the Colorado tourism industry ignited in the spring of 2015 when the City of Trinidad commissioned him to create and design twelve “Legends of Trinidad Banners.” These banners celebrated the legendary characters that depict the diverse portrait of our hometown, Trinidad, Colorado. In the summer of 2016, Wharton launched the first “New Legends Magazine – Legends of Trinidad, the Information Source for Southeast Colorado,” with the sponsorship of the City of Trinidad’s Tourism Board, along with multiple sponsors and advertisers. The well-disguised visitors guide with Bat Masterson on the cover took off like a rocket. The original 20,000 magazines quickly flew off the shelves, so another 20,000 were printed and distributed in the summer of 2016. The combination of history and information continues to attract readers of all ages. Printing and distribution have grown from 65,000 per year to 140,000; that’s almost half a million readers annually with many more online.

A broader campaign formulated with the launch of the spring 2017 edition: “Discover the Hidden Treasures of the Sangre De Cristos,” expanded the territory to include Huerfano and Las Animas Counties in Colorado, and Colfax and Union counties in New Mexico. The distribution also increased including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. 2018 brought about the launch of the New Legends Magazine website (newlegendsmag.com) and social media. NLM now provides the first ever, daily updated calendar of events for our region. The site also includes the magazines, stories, restaurants, shopping and things to do. The comment we hear the most is, “I didn’t know there was so much to do in our area.”

NLM, Summer 2018 CoverBy polishing and promoting the Sangre de Cristo Region as a total tourist destination, opportunities for regional shopping, restaurants and lodging stays increase, thus improving the economic outlook for our region. Mr. Wharton’s role as publisher delegates his key responsibilities in community collaboration, marketing and media development (especially affordable advertising), motivational manager, researcher, photographer, graphic designer and recruiter of multiple contributing photographers, designers, writers and sponsors.

New Legends Magazine celebrates the rich history of the Santa Fe Trail and the Highway of Legends with stories of legendary figures both past and present. It features everything from special events, entertainment, restaurants, shops, museums, libraries, state and national parks, art galleries, live theater, sports, outdoor adventures and nightlife. The quarterly special interest magazine is distributed to area hotels, motels, restaurants, grocery stores, regional and local welcome centers, rest stops, museums, Trinidad State Junior College, NRA Whittington Center and Vermejo Park. Every magazine is archived and available on newlegendsmag.com website and daily specials from sponsors and local events are featured on social media.

NLM SampleCollaborating with regional businesses, city councils and commissions, tourism boards, chambers of commerce, Main Street groups, museums and antique/art galleries, Wharton creates commercial quality advertisements, while incorporating complimentary listings for restaurants, lodging, and shopping that entice tourists to “this ethereal land” making the Sangre de Cristo region a prominent travel destination. Over 100 sites in six states (Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska) now carry New Legends Regional Magazine. Many host a six-pocket white display stand, encouraging locals to take pride in our history and tourists to study our history, while at the same time locate the best shopping, restaurants, hotels and outdoor adventures in the Sangre de Cristo region. From font selection to multi-year marketing campaigns and personalized magazine distribution, Steve Wharton meticulously maneuvers meaningful stories about our region, mesmerizing the hometown folk as well as the international traveler.
